Want to Learn about Poisonous Mushrooms in Virginia?
Mushrooms are a diverse and fascinating group of organisms that play a crucial role in
ecosystems worldwide. It is estimated that Virginia has 2,700 wild mushroom species!
A team of Virginia Master Naturalists, in collaboration with the Blue Ridge Poison Center at
University of Virginia Health, and the University of Virginia School of Medicine’s Division of
Medical Toxicology, have written and published “The Claudius Project – Poisonous Mushrooms
in Virginia.” They selected and documented the most significant poisonous mushrooms in
Virginia.
